About Yipeng

Yipeng Lantern Festival, also called Yee Peng is originated from the Lanna culture in Northern Thailand. Yi Peng means “the second full moon” of Lanna’s calendar month, is a religious event where various types of lanterns is put up in front of the house to show devotion to the Buddha, including the sky lanterns to worship the deities in the high heaven.

Highlights : 

• Magical Mass Lantern Release: The signature of Yi Peng is thousands of sky lanterns (“khom loi”) ascending into the night—each carrying wishes for good luck and blessings .

• Combined Celebration: While Yi Peng focuses on lanterns rising skyward, Loy Krathong complements with lantern floats on water. Chiang Mai celebrates both in harmony, offering a dazzling visual feast .

• Organized Event by CAD: The Chiang Mai Arts & Design (CAD) Cultural Center hosts a ticketed mass release event featuring cultural performances (Northern Thai dances, tribal arts, traditional music), Lanna cuisine, ceremonies, and meditative lantern releases .
