Loy Krathong Festival - Sukhothai

“Candle Lighting and Fire Play Tradition,” Sukhothai

The Loy Krathong and Candle Lighting – Fire Play Festival is one of Thailand’s most enchanting cultural events, celebrated grandly in Sukhothai, the birthplace of Loy Krathong.

During the festival, locals and visitors gather at the Sukhothai Historical Park, where ancient temples and lotus ponds are illuminated by thousands of candles, lanterns, and fireworks. People float krathongs (decorative banana-leaf floats with candles and flowers) on the water to pay respect to the Goddess of the River and to let go of misfortunes.

Highlights :

• 🕯️ Candle-lighting ceremonies around the ruins

• 🎆 Spectacular fire shows & cultural performances

• 🌊 Thousands of floating krathongs lighting up the ponds

• 🛕 Traditional rituals, music, and dance in a historic setting

🌟 The name “เผาเทียน เล่นไฟ” (Phao Tian Len Fai) means “burning candles and playing with fire,” reflecting the magical lights and festive spirit that fill the ancient city during this celebration.
